Does anyone have any tricks to help navigate the recently "improved"
ITTVIS code contribution site at
http://www.ittvis.com/UserCommunity/CodeLibrary.aspx ?
The only way I can figure out how to browse the library to see what is
available is to consecutively view the 61 slowly loading pages of IDL
code contributions. Then if I find something interesting which I
might want to use at a later time, there is no way to bookmark it,
since my browser bookmark always goes back to the same frontpage
http://www.ittvis.com/UserCommunity/CodeLibrary.aspx
True, there is a search button, so if I remember a code name or
keyword I can then look it up. Even then, it does not seem possible
to enter the site with the search text already filled.
Thanks, --Wayne

I've half composed more diatribes on the suckiness of the RSI now ITTVIS
website more times than I care to admit. Pretty much every time I visit
the website or the topic comes up on this list I start typing. It
astounds me. And with this latest go around it is worse! I'm guessing
they have built it using iTools :)
But seriously ITTVIS, come on. Isn't more difficult to sell software
when your competitors sites are far superior? It's time to scrap your
current site and call in the pros. Given the current state of the US
economy I'm sure you can find some experienced web developers cheap!

That sounds unbelievable. Why shouldn't they not be able to hire a
student who does hack that in their application in a few days?

Yeah, plainly spoken, the user contributed library website sucks since
they overhauled their entire portal in August. I complained at that
time to ITTVIS that the previous site was way better, but received no
answer. Some months later, in October, a colleague of mine who holds
50 ENVI licenses complained again, specifically about the lack of
redirectioning for the old links (which happen to be cited in some
scientific journals), the disappearance of the summary info that
described each contribution and made easier to navigate the library;
the reset of the information tracking the no. of downloads; and the
funky search window, which instead of returning results would ask you
to 'add a new item'.
He received immediate response with the best intentions to resolve all
these problems, and a very convincing explanation about the source of
the problems (that they tried to implement a google search mechanism
for the web site, but it kept crashing on them). After two months,
they have apparently solved the search issue, but the rest continues
in a state that does not foster its usage or the addition of new
contributions. Probably our only hope is that a military guy holding a
big contract complains…

Whoa! You, too!?
I thought I had fallen into some kind of a time warp
because I suddenly had the feeling I was back in
graduate school working with 300 baud modems. When
I complained, no one at ITTVIS seemed to know
what I was talking about, so I thought it was just
me. :-)
Cheers,
David
P.S. You do begin to wonder though, don't you, if people
who use the word "improved" know what it means.

This is a bit off-topic, but I've started using github.com. It took me
a while to get my head around version control using git, but it was
well worth the effort. I am just starting to use GitHub as a
repository and distribution point for applications. I'm often a bit
slow at merging changes, particularly when I make a change on a
clients computer and I forget to commit them back to my home
repository. With github this can all be done on the web.
Hopefully I will be able to show it all off when it is complete. It is
taking some time to design a sensible build system which will generate
pretty windows installers.
