I too have probelms with contour filling when my data strays too far outside
the area being contoured - rubbish triangles fill the area (this is using polar
stereo).
My solution is to restrict my data before I plot to the rectangle I want
and things are then OK (unless I'm trying to line-fill unclosed contours whereupon
they don't fill; but thats another story...)
