If you are still having trouble with your local help, the IDL 6.4 help
is available from NASA:

http://idlastro.gsfc.nasa.gov/idl_html_help/home.html

Not as convenient as local help, but if the alternative is no help...

By the way, an online archive of IDL's help from past (and current)
releases would be very useful (hint, hint ITT VIS).
