This was discussed about a month ago. One solution was to add
+' ' to the file name in the OPEN statement. This helps with
long file names, but not with long extensions.

Well, I see in the release notes for v4.0.1 that "Long filenames
not supported in IDL for Windows". How unfortunate...I hope we
can look forward to a fix in the forthcoming v5.0
