What OSX version are you running? There was an issue with idl 6.3 and OSX
10.4.7. That version of OSX 10.4.7 had a register copy bug which caused
idl to segfault:

Additionally, when I upgraded to 10.4.8, I discovered a problem with X11
in the 10.4.8 distribution that caused X11 PPC apps to segfault. If you
think this is the problem, the solution is to install 10.4.8, and then
upgrade your X11 package.
