area selection with widgets [message #652]

I currently have an application that displays an image in a draw widget.
I would like to be able to select a portion of the image with the mouse.
This selected portion could then be magnified, filtered, etc. The shape
of the portion selected would be rectangle that is drawn with a
press-drag-release mouse button sequence. Any suggestions on the
implementation of this "area selector" would be greatly appreceiated.
