Hi Chris,

Thanks for your responses.

Well, I just downloaded and installed this X11 "update" and everything
seems to be back to normal.

Hi,

One potential fix is to install the latest XQuartz package that is
appropriate for your system. You can also get older versions if you want
to downgrade your X11 system.

Hello all,

Thanks for the posts and the help.

So, what is the way around this change in the libX11?

Thanks,

Raul

There was a libX11 update included
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3438
so the answer is probably yes.

Could it be something like the X11 library update that broke IDL on
Linux? See http://www.dfanning.com/misc_tips/segfault.html

I think this is a different problem.

For me at least, IDL experiences this problem even if I run it from
X11.app. The bus error also only occurs with the use of the TV
command, while PLOT and HELP, /DEVICE perform correctly.

My $DISPLAY appears to be set correctly, and really must be since I
see the output of PLOT.

It would appear to have something to do with X, because I can use the
TV command to write to a PostScript file without incident.

I am experiencing the same behavior.

Hi,

I think this tip from David Fanning's ever-useful site might be
helpful.

http://www.dfanning.com/tips/maccrash.html

The syntax of the display variable seemed (to me) to be very tricky
for IDL 6.3. I have the same OS and IDL version as you and things
work fine. My display variable looks like...

setenv DISPLAY :0

All:

I just wanted to acknowledge you all. Last night I too ran into the
idl crash problem "bus error" problem when invoking tv or tvscl in idl
6.4 with set_plot,'x' also invoked. Changing to set_plot,'ps' or 'z'
did not cause tv to make idl crash. Invoking atv or iplot also caused
the "bus error". I was using an Xterm. I note also that the
idlde.app and IDLDemos.app also crashed (without saying why).

The above update to X11 described by Raul fixed the problem.

Many thanks...

:Stephan
plot continued to function.

Thank YOU, Raul, for posting that this worked. I thought I was going
to have to shell out for 7.0!

I had the same problem, downgraded to the earlier version X11 via
Raul's link, and it's working for me.
