Folks,
I've updated my nCDF_Browser program this weekend to support
HDF files. I did this primarily because I have been working
with HDF files lately, and I am always annoyed with
the HDF_Browser command that is supplied with IDL. It just
feels so clunky. I want a simple way to see what is
inside an HDF file and to get at the piece I want.
I realize the scientific dataset formats are suppose to
be "standards", but I also know from experience that just
about every new file I read breaks my browser in some way.
That is to say, I doubt whether every netCDF or HDF file
has been *written* to the standard. Oh, possibly, the
"standard" appears to leave a lot of wiggle room for
"weirdness".
In any case, I get lots of reports that this or that file
can't be read. These are most helpful to me in making my
software more robust. Please let me know. I don't guarantee
my software will work with *your* file, only that it works,
usually, with the files I know about and work with. :-)
At the moment, only scientific datasets (SD) in HDF files
are supported. I'll probably be making further modifications
to these programs, as needed in my own work.
You can find all the programs you need to run the nCDF_Browser
here:
