OK, the kind folks at SSEC provided me with an answer.

With OpenADDE Java interface, it can be access thru the IDL Java
Bridge to download weather satellite imagery and weather radar data
driectly into IDL.

Sounds interesting enough, that I'll have to try it out. Now where is
that Java Bridge documentation......
