I did, but it didnt work well. Especially when using c_linestyles
instead of full contours, the overplot looks messy i.e. dashes dont
line up perfectly. :(

You could draw the contours in black with the labels, and draw them
again in gray, overplotting the black contours. Just set the /
overplot keyword in contour.

I don't know what I was thinking - that doesn't work at all! I forgot
that the labels were in-line with the contours in IDL, which does make
things look pretty messy. You could have different colored downhill
ticks if you'd like that for some reason. Sorry....
