Yes, the VPUrecover is running and other OpenGL apps work fine. Part
of the strangness is that we took a picture of a grid of squares and
the squares were distored in the X by about a factor of 4...

We have the latest drivers downloaded but I will ask about the "GPU
Recover" option.

Crashes as in IDL crashes.

Hi Ronn,

Over the years I have run into some minor rendering issues with ATI
cards in IDL but nothing like this. I'm sure you've suggested this but
your client should upgrade to the latest driver supplied by ATI (not his
PC vendor). I would also suggest running another openGL based
application to see if you see the same problem. When you say "sometimes
crashes", does IDL exit unceremoniously or does the OS go down? Do you
have "GPU Recover" enabled in the ATI driver control panel?

Like I said, I would first install the latest driver. If that doesn't
fix the problem I would get a replacement card from the PC vendor.

Sheesh. It seems the nems.noaa usenet server is missing more and more
posts these days... Usenet is dead. NOAA said so. I must have
deleted the memo.

I'm stretching here, but is there an "application profile" that is
being loaded when IDL runs? I don't have a modern ATI card installed
in any of my machines so I can't poke around the driver control panel
but usually you can configure settings that get triggered when a
certain .exe is run. Have you tried setting all of those advanced
settings to the default values and/or set them all to "off"? At least
with an older ATI adapter I have here and the Dell OEM drivers you
can't disable some "features" but you can at least uncheck
"application preference" and force a certain mode.

What version of IDL?

Answers to my complaints to the NOAA MOC (or WOC? I can never remember) are that it is an
upstream issue with the provider (Qwest, I think). Fixing it is probably a very low
priority (for both NOAA and Qwest; wherever the problem is)
