I haven't done much edge detection, but IDL did some of what I needed.
The NIH (National Institute of Health) has an excellent, free
visualization software product for the Macintosh. It is used for
looking for nasty things on X-rays, etc., measuring them, and so
forth. The documentation is good. The best place to get NIH Image
is zippy.nimh.nih.gov [128.231.98.32].
