The XQuartz icon is different. It is a black X with an orange
ring around it.

I see there is a new release dated May 17 that requires 10.5.7.

Actually I am using XQuartz, forgot to mention that. Or at least I
think I am.... at least I have XQuartz installed. Does XQuartz
overwrite the default X11 installation or could IDL still be using the
Apple X11?

Have you tried installing XQuartz instead of the X11 shipped
by Apple?

Like I said, I have XQuartz installed, I just didn't know if it could
coexist with the original Apple X11.....For the record, IDL is using
XQuartz (the XQuartz icon pops up when I use IDL when physically
sitting at the computer) and I have the most recent version installed
(installed after the update to 10.5.7). I guess something could have
been reset or modified during that update, maybe it isn't the apple
update but rather the XQuartz update causing the problems. Obviously
X11 forwarding is still allowed otherwise I couldn't run xterm or
xclock. Could IDL be looking in the wrong place for X and that's why
I can open X windows from the terminal but not from inside IDL? I'm
relatively new to IDL (only been using it for a couple of months) so
I'm not sure how to investigate IDL specific problems.

Thanks for any help.
