I was sent to this group by David Fanning because he didn't know
anything off the top of his head about my issue.
I just updated to OS X 10.5.7 the other day without any problems at
all. IDL still worked perfectly and I continued my research like
normal. Today I decided to work from home and ssh into my mac at
work. My X11 is working fine (if I type 'xclock' at the terminal the
xclock pops up), but if I try to use any graphics commands in IDL
(plot, tv, etc.) then I get a 'bus error' and IDL exits.
David Fanning answered a question like this previously (http://
www.dfanning.com/tips/maccrash.html), but reading through the answer
(which included some advice from here) didn't help and didn't resolve
the problem.
Any ideas on what could be wrong?

So I downgraded to the same version that my coworker had installed
(XQuartz 2.2.3) and then updated, one step at a time, up the most
recent version. I don't know what the difference is, but IDL gives me
a 'bus error' for any of the XQuartz 2.3.3.* versions. Everything
works fine with the 2.3.2.1 version, which is what I have installed
now. I don't know if this makes any difference, but I am using ssh
from a Windows machine with PuTTY and Xming (can't get cygwin to work
on Vista); however, when I went into work for a few minutes today I
was able to ssh using another Mac (or a linux box) and use IDL without
any problems.
Someone with more experience than I might want to look into this and
see what the real issue is. Thanks everyone.

I have seen this happen on some of our old Macs, but we are retiring them so I
haven't tried to fix it. They may have an older version of IDL installed. Network
logins are currently bollixed up, so I can't login to check.
It might be time to upgrade to IDL 7.
The only problem I have currently is when running with multiple monitors. IDL
and X work, but IDL spews floating point errors when I move the mouse in
a window that has been dragged from one monitor to another.

I am using ssh, OSX 10.5.7 and X11 2.3.3.2 without any problem.
Possibly the OSX upgrade has changed security features.
I am using ssh with options -X -Y!

As a further note, if I ssh into my coworkers machine, which is
running an older version of XQuartz, then IDL works fine. I'm going
to try downgrading XQuartz and see what happens.

XQuartz must be reinstalled after every OSX system update. It does not
coexist, but replaces the official release. Also, the official X11 release
with OSX will overwrite any changes made by installing XQuartz.
The official OSX release of X11 occasionally picks up changes from the
XQuartz project, but on a slower timeline...so an OSX system update will
sometimes *downgrade* your X11 system.
