Since you mention CDE, has anyone else noticed that the IDL pickfile()
function seems to have a problem with CDE? On all of our 2.5 and
2.5.1 hosts, if an IDL program uses pickfile with a filter, and there
are no matching files in the directory that it is started in, the
"Files" field gets into weird state and won't properly display *any*
filenames when you navigate into a directory with matching files.
Setting the current directory to one with files that match the filter
cures the problem.

I haven't submitted a bug report, because it was my experience when
running IDL on 2.4, that anytime I had a display problem RSI would feel
the need to inform me that 2.4 wasn't a supported OS. Since we adopted
2.5 and CDE fairly early on, I didn't need the aggravation of hearing this
message again. Perhaps now there are enough 2.5 (and CDE?) users that
RSI might address the problem.

Some time ago a representative from Research Systems posted
an announcement that IDL had been tested under Solaris 2.5 .
We currently use IDL under 2.3 and 2.5, with no problems.

The reference to Solaris 2.3 for IDL (and Solaris 2.4 for PV~Wave)
doesn't mean they won't run on other releases, but that was the release
the version was developed on.

To cover their backs, software vendors describe these as "supported
releases" where they can reasonably guarantee that the code they wrote
will do what they say. It *should* also work on subsequent releases,
and in the case of Solaris, does. Solaris 2.5 is superior to 2.3 in
just about every way: it's kernel is smaller, faster and more reliable,
you get the CDE windowing system, NFS 3.0 rather than 2.0. etc. etc.
etc.

Summary: no problem running IDL or Wave on an Ultra 1.

regards, Pete.

Deb,

I am running IDLv4.0.1/ENVIv2.0 on a SPARC 20 under Solaris 2.5
with no apparent glitches.
