How to import idl 7 .project files? [message #66771]

I managed to corrupt my local idl setup to the point where idlde would
not startup. (Idl 7.0.3 on a networked linux box.) I deleted ~/.idl/
itt/ and now idlde starts up OK, creating a new ~/.idl/itt directory.
However, now the Project Explorer does not show any of my projects. I
have a number of idl projects, and their associated .project files, in
various project directories (not in the idl workspace). I tried to
open a project file with 'File->Open File> All Files (*.*), but
the .project file does not appear.

Does any one know a way to import a .project file? Or do I need to
reconstruct the project?
