Hello,
I'm wondering if anyone else is having this problem. Pardon the
quality of this post, but its due to my ignorance and not laziness,
thanks.
Basically, it seems like the latest OS X security update has disabled
my lmgrd file somehow, which seems to limit IDL to demo mode. However,
as noted below, running shade_surf causes a bus error, and its my
understanding that shade_surf works in
The local mac fixit guys say that they can restore the OS to how it
was a few days ago, at which point I'm hoping I"ll be back in
business. Based on the information below, does anyone have any opinion
or experience with this? Or might an update to my x-windows file be a
better bet? Based on my limited understanding, OS X security upgrades
have been known to do squirrely things with anything dealing with X
windows.
I'm running IDL 6.2 on a Mac Powerbook G4 with a PowerPC chip, OS X
10.4.11. Also, running IDL at the command line of an X window: X11
1.1.3 - XFree86 4.4.0. However, I get exactly the same errors I
describe below if I run IDL from the Terminal.app.
Yesterday (August 25th) I did a security update : Mac OS X Security
Update 2009-004 (PowerPC) and my programs don't work properly now. The
programs work fine on another system.
Specifically, here's what I'm doing.
A few months back my hard drive crashed but macmedics.com were able to
move everything to a new drive and reinstall OS X 10.4.11. However,
the only way I could get IDL to run after that was to type lmgrd at
the prompt, and then type idl at the prompt. I only had to type lmgrd
once per session.
If I type lmgrd at the prompt I get the following:
[rasputin:~/vipr] quigley% lmgrd
[rasputin:~/vipr] quigley% ps
PID TT STAT TIME COMMAND
217 p1 Ss+ 0:00.11 -csh
289 p2 Ss+ 0:00.12 -csh
336 p3 Ss 0:00.20 -csh
498 p3 S 0:00.01 /Applications/rsi/idl_6.2/bin/bin.darwin.ppc/
lmgrd
I assume the lmgrd file in Applications is what's being activated. As
I said, doing this, and then typing idl at the prompt worked just fine
for nearly three months now, until yesterday.
Now, this is what happens:
- If I type idl at the prompt, after 20 seconds it goes into demo
mode.
OR
- If I type lmgrd after 20 seconds I get the following message:

in use.
11:47:30 (lmgrd) Possible causes:
11:47:30 (lmgrd) 1) The license server manager (lmgrd) is already
running for this license.
11:47:30 (lmgrd) 2) The OS has not "cleared" this port since lmgrd
died.

(unlikely).
11:47:30 (lmgrd) Solutions:
11:47:30 (lmgrd) 1) Make sure lmgrd and all vendor daemons for
this

11:47:30 (lmgrd) 2) You may have to wait for the OS to clear this

Eventually, lmgrd gives up.

seconds I get:

At this point if I hit return I get the usual-looking idl prompt.
If I run the following code:
pro test,xxx
close,1,2
plot,findgen(10)
openw,1,'junk.out'
printf,1,'junk'
close,1
return
end
I get an error message to the effect that openw is disabled for demo
mode, not surprisingly. If lmgrd is hung up, then I imagine IDL is
unable to find the license file or something and goes into demo mode.
A more complicated program gives the error message "Bus error",
apparently at the point in the code where I call shade_surf.....
If anyone has any ideas on what's going on or how to fix things I'd
certainly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Mark
