Go to the following FTP site and download all the .pro files:

ftp://ftp.ssec.wisc.edu/pub/gumley/hdfdump/

Now try the following in IDL

hdfdump, 'myfile.hdf'

You should get a complete listing of the contents of the file,
including the Vdata hierarchy. Note that this works for HDF4 files
only.
