Try searching on the net for "ECMWF" European Center for Medium range
Weather Forecasting, and you should turn up information for
experimental data of pressure, temperature, wind and many other
variables. (3-4 years of continuous data would be gigabytes though...)

I have some of this sort of ECMWF data displayed in an IDL contour map
at

http://www.amara.com/past/viz.html

but I can't give you details for how my co-worker got our ECMWF
datasets. I only know that even 1 month of this data was huge
(hundreds of megabytes, I think) and that he had to do some slicing to
get manageable 1-10 megabyte pieces.
