I see the following:

IDL> print, smooth([1,5,1,1], 3) ;--- both are integer type
1 2 2 1
IDL> print, smooth([1,5,1,1], 3.) ;--- integer array
1 2 2 1
IDL> print, smooth([1.,5.,1.,1.], 3) ;--- integer width
1.00000 2.33333 2.33333 1.00000
IDL> print, smooth([1.,5.,1.,1.], 3.) ;--- all floating-point
1.00000 2.33333 2.33333 1.00000

Similar for 2D arrays.
