First, thanks to all for their advice so far...

JD comes closest with the above comment about DISPLAY. If I set my
display to a nonsensical value (:1.1) and fire up emacs and hit C-c C-s,
the shell starts and works properly. Better than nothing but VERY far
from ideal... Now to figure out what's "broken" with X (ughhhh)
