I did not know that the difference is that large! I'm working in
Germany, too and I am lucky that my institute has a set of 35 floating
licenses last year. However, discounts get larger, the more licenses
are bought. The problem is that IDL is not distributed by ITTVis but a
"local" firm called Creaso. Creaso does nothing else than sell IDL in
Europe, provide a mediocre support and - looking at the number you
gave us - live quite good with it.

I think it would be better, if ITTVis would distribute it themselves.

Sincerely
Jan

I completely agree. I have for a long time wondered what reasons
ITTVIS could have for not selling directly to everybody, and why they
let the distributors charge so much more. What do the local
distributors do for us? Only get in the way, and charge a lot more
than ITTVIS does in the US.

I am surprised that in Germany it is worse than in Brazil, where
academic prices for fixed IDL-only licenses are R$863 (~500 USD), and
floating licenses cost R$1380 (~780 USD). Commercial fixed licenses
are R$7188 (~4100 USD), and floating licenses are R$12363 (~7000 USD).

I have been told that in the US a fixed academic license is $300, and
a fixed commercial license is $2500. Also, in the US there are student
licenses for $89.
