hi everyone,

I've recently moved to an academic research institution in Germany and
I asked our system administrator if he would install a floating
network license for IDL, which I've been using for several years as a
graduate student in the US. I was shocked when he told me that the
price for a single user floating network license is 3000 euros, after
our institution's 30% discount! This is almost 10 times the cost of
the same license in the United States!

Is this consistent with other people's experience? It it just in
Germany where the cost is so high?

thanks,

Annual maintenance contracts are the same as the initial price, in the
US at least. That's currently $300 for a node-locked license, $480
for a single user floating network license. Those are academic
prices, mind you.

What do you have to pay for the support per year for getting updates in
the US?

Nope, similar amount in the Netherlands, depending on the size of the
site. And people still wonder why some are looking for alternatives.
