I've sold something on the order of 5000 books. So, maybe
25000-50000 users? Just a guess. Half of whatever the
marketing folks tell you. :-)

P.S. I do think the number of *active* IDL users has been
dropping precipitously in recent years. Changes in IDL 8
is likely to stem this tide, and if an emphasis on user
needs continues, maybe it can even be reversed.
