And here I was, thinking that Google Groups were the "new" way of
browsing Usenet.
Thanks guys, I am now using the Seamonkey Newsreader and all the spam is
gone! :D

Agree, it seems to be the nntp server, and how they run filters on
the groups (that's a wild guess though). I used to see quite a bit, but
recently (last few months) it has seemed pretty clean.
I use nntp.aioe.org, a free server.
