I agree it seems unnecessary. Which is probably why Perl has it (the
only language I know that does), though I think it is just an alias.

That, and I do not believe there is a cotangent function in any
programming language.

You do realize that cot(x) = 1/tan(x) ? Can you explain why this is
not sufficient?
