I think the basic problem is to figure out how to get the
polygons generated by Map_GSHHS_Shoreline into ENVI as a
vector layer. I don't have any idea how to do this. (It
may even be easier to use GSHHS shapefiles for this, rather
than the polygon files Map_GSHHS_Shoreline uses.)

I put continental outlines on images a LOT. It's just about
the only way I can figure out what I am doing with an image.
But I have never figured out a good way to do this in ENVI.
It literal takes on the order of *minutes* to draw a continental
outline on an ENVI image (verses instantaneously in IDL). I don't
know why. The ENVI representatives I have discussed this with
don't know why, either.

I guess what I am saying is, even if you could figure out how
to make a vector layer from the GSHHS data, I'm not sure you
are going to be happy with the result. It just seems to me that
this is one of those few things that ENVI is not very good at.
