if I follow you correctly, just replace y with z.
(in these two lines)

colors = Round(Scale_Vector(Findgen(s), Min(z), Max(z)))
elevColors = Value_Locate(colors, z)

Also, my iTools have been acting up so I'd like to do this without
using them if possible.
