I get that error also when I try to download IDL (not just 8.0, it
happens frequently). Trying again, switching between updating and
evaluating, etc, seems to get it to work.

Ah, that's 200K elements. Post is updated, with source code for timing
and creating graph.

Thanks for your write up!

It really takes 15 seconds to add 200 elements to a hash list????
[ based on your final chart. ]

I'm still waiting for approval to download 7.1, which was submitted on
the 21st May. So don't hold your breath. I emailed ITTVIS to report the
problem, they said my account was now fixed and I would be able to
download. Wrong, it still requires approval, and I'm still waiting...

Download works fine. I've not been sent my new license yet, so it only
lasts 7 minutes, /but/ at least I can leave it running with the "you
have run out of time" dialog up while reading through as much of the
Help on the new stuff as I want.

I cannot download the new version for trial.
It seems that I must wait for the approval from ITT VIS.
But I do not know how long it will take.
Is there anybody who has downloaded it and is using it?

I'll again go through a few of the new features of the release on my
site. The first topic is the new list and hash types:

http://michaelgalloy.com/2010/07/22/idl-8-0-lists-and-hashes .html

Very cool.

I do wonder why the overloading syntax is implemented like so:
function mgffhdf5file::_overloadBracketsRightSide, ....
rather than something like
function mgffhdf5file::_overload[], ....
?

Is there a BracketsLeftSide overload option? If so, that could have been
function mgffhdf5file::_overload[]=, ....

Similarly for the usual operators. Why
function myclass::_overloadPlus, left, right
instead of
function myclass::_overload+, left, right
?

(and, yes, I am thinking of the ruby way).

Given the fact that there is an "_overload" prefix, I would've thought it easy to correctly parse everything between
that and the next "," to correctly interpret the operator or operation to be overloaded.

BTW, does IDL 8.0 have the ability to create user defined operators?

cheers,

paulv

The new Workbench:

http://michaelgalloy.com/2010/08/03/idl-8-0-idl-workbench.ht ml

I think there will be two more articles: the new graphics system and
other language changes.

Here's the article on other language changes, i.e., negative subscripts,
!null, automatic garbage collection, and other changes to object syntax:
