If I have an array and I want to select say, the first n elements
thereof, can I do so without using a loop.

For example if I want to select all the elements, I'd use an *

Fermiona, based on your two questions, I suggest you read the "Arrays"
section of the IDL manual, available online at
http://idlastro.gsfc.nasa.gov/idl_html_help/Arrays.html . IDL has
some pretty uncommon and useful capabilities in this department that
you might like to know about.
