Thanks so much. I quickly followed your suggestion and as far as I can
tell it works.
More testing tomorrow when I get to my office.

I could never get the LD_PRELOAD_PATH solution working.

A dodgy solution I found was to copy the (old trustworthy) libX11
files to some folder and then start idl at the command line from
within that folder.
