Pete,
I am not sure what SUSE version we use as I am not the admin of these
machines. Because of all the different Linux dsitros, support on this
platform is more cumbersome. What would be helpful to Linux users is a
pre-requisite checker, which tests for all the required libraries and
version numbers. This would allow the user some trouble shooting
support to be attempted before contacting tech support. THe solution
to my issue is probably simple.

Chris,
Not sure whether your problem is related to mine or not. I think it
maybe a separate problem. This crash I am experiencing seems to be
very specific to the SUSE Linux version. I have tested this in a VM
running Ubuntu and I have had no issued whatsoever.

I'm on SUSE 10.2, neither of those cause me problems. I'm in the
process of migrating stuff to 11.3 so I'll be able to check that soon.

I have had similar problems on Mac OS X. If a program encounters an
error, stop, or breakpoint, and I hit command-f8 to recompile before
fitting command-F2 to stop, the workbench will crash.
I have also been working with tech support.

I think the above is quite right, but minor data-point is that a fresh
install of 11.3 including development support runs 8.0 without your
particular issues.

Pete,
I am still not sure what the problem is, but detailed information has
been collected and the bug has been filed as CR#60656. Hopefully this
is one of the many issues that have been fixed for v8.0.1.
