Oh, just to be clear, I was excited there is a way to *disable* this
new behavior. I also hate it!
And back to the direct graphics windows issue, I hadn't tested that
well when I answered before. On OS X WSHOW is bringing DG windows to
the foreground. Now that I turned off the "graphics on top", uh,
feature, they really do come all the way to the top! So, you may be
back again to a Windows vs. IDL 8 issue, unfortunately. :(

I presume when you are forced to work on a laptop and
the graphics window is about the size of your edit window. :-)
Doesn't it make a bit more sense, though, to let the
*user* be in charge of where and when he wants the
damn window to be on top? I never thought I would
turn into an activist for the WShow command, of
all things, but there you are. I miss it! :-(
Cheers,
David

Nice, I didn't catch that. I don't quite understand when that is
useful, especially as a default (unless I flipped it by accident ;).

This appears to be true, although the preference is
a bit misleading. It says "Graphics windows stay on
top". What it means is that "New graphics windows
stay on top, if they are not embedded in a widget
program or some other useful construction. Normal
graphics windows and embedded new graphics windows
disappear behind other applications and are lost
for all time."
I can understand wanting the direct graphics folks
to get down in steerage where they belong, but
isn't taking away their WShow command like kicking
them in the teeth, too. :-(
Cheers,
David
P.S. Despite the rough treatment, I don't see direct
graphics programs disappearing any time soon. As much
as I like the new graphics commands (and, of course, I
mean when they work), there seem to be a number of
limitations to actually using them in programs. I'll
say this about them, though. The fonts are beautiful!
Whether that's enough to get the old codgers to
adopt them I don't know. Somebody had better be working
on a bunch of whiz-bang examples to show the folks the
way.

The always on top behavior is new on IDL 8, and can be turned off in
the preferences.

It could be IDL since this is similar with OS X. Whenever the IDL DE
is the active app, the new graphics windows pop to the top--even
*over* the DE window. The DE gets focus when you click on it, but
graphics windows are always on top.

Well, it's possible. It *does* appear to be a
random process. :-(

Do you use this "feature" in Windows 7 or Vista? Both versions have
the bug of "stealing focus" of active applications (randomly)...
Maybe, it's not IDL.
