What type of server, and what access do you have to the server?
If the server is acting as a floating license manager, and the license
covers IDL for Windows, you can install IDL on the PC and point it at
the license manager.
If it's UNIX/Linux, and you can login to that server using Cygwin you
shouldn't need anything on the PC. If you login using an ssh client
(such as PuTTY) you'll need to direct the IDL output to your Cygwin
screen using the correct DISPLAY setting in the terminal session on the
server. I think PuTTY can handle this, but I'm not entirely sure. It's
not something I've done, but I believe that some visitors we've had here
have used this mechanism.
What we do is run FreeNX on our Linux server, and use NX client on the
PCs. This allows PC users to login to the Linux server and run IDL
there. Nothing else is required.

An official command line interface was added to Windows IDL in IDL 7.1
(maybe 7.0?).
As far as I know, it is not possible to use any of these IDL interfaces
from Cygwin though. When using Windows, I normally have both a Cygwin
terminal window and a regular Windows terminal open.
