I think I remember (but it has been a very long time) that when
we had Dec Alphas running 64-bit Unix, it would write 8-byte
length words at the beginning and end of Fortran records. This
allowed records greater than 2 GB.

So, if it is possible, it will have to be something you do on
the Fortran side.

In fact, the IDL documentation mentions this possibility
