You need to set appropriate resources in your .Xdefaults file (assuming
you're on a Unix system). e.g.:

Idl*background: palegreen
! Idl*background: Magenta
Idl*text*background: lightcyan
Idl*button*background: lightcyan
Idl*slider*background: lightcyan
Idl*list*background: lightcyan

You can do fancier things if you set the RESOURCE key in the windget
definitions but I'm not sure of the exct details offhand.
