One of the things that I do with IDL is compute trajectories for
atmospheric air parcels using global winds.

It has taken a few days to get geared up (partly because I was
traveling), but my research group is now posting hindcast and
forecast trajectories from the Japanese nuclear power plants
that were damaged by the earthquake and tsunami.

These are simple calculations. We are not modeling the processes
that disperse or remove the radiation. We are only trying to
estimate where the wind might carry it.
