On MacOS X, IDL widgets are all generated using X Windows. I have mine
set up so that either middle-mouse-button, or option-left-button will
paste the clipboard's contents into the currently selected text field
or window. In the X11 Preferences, I have "Emulate three button mouse"
selected for times when I'm just using the trackpad on my laptop and a
3-button mouse isn't available.

Note that *within* X Windows, selecting text automatically puts it on
the clipboard. So you can copy and paste by selecting text and then
option-clicking or middle-clicking in the destination field. Text you
select or cut using Command-C or Command-X from other programs is
available for pasting into X Windows using the same steps.
