Hi David,
I sometimes run into problems with IDL refusing to load DICOM images from certain medical imaging systems. I think the reason for my problems is that one or more of the tags in the DICOM file are written in a way that IDL does not like. To fix the problem I run the images through the dcmdjpeg command in the Offis DICOM toolkit (http://dicom.offis.de/dcmtk.php.en). This program is intended to produce a copy of the images with uncompressed image data. However, as well as uncompressing the image data, the utility also fixes problems it finds with DICOM tags. This utility has always fixed the IDL loading problem for me.
It sounds like you'll need the jpeg2000 version if you want to try it on the files that you have (http://dicom.offis.de/dcmjp2k.php.en). Unfortunately this version needs to be licensed, but you can have a free trial for four months (http://dicom.offis.de/evaluation.php.en).
