There isn't any 2GB file size limit for gzip. Your filesystem may well
have a 2GB limit (FAT32/VFAT for example), but gzip has none.

As an example:

$ ls -lh user.tgz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 159G 2010-09-28 19:11 user.tgz

that's a 160GB gzipped tar file.
