Thanks Ali for the history. Now for the future. The split is very sad and
unfortunate to some of us who use both packages. Does it mean this group will
have to split too?

In what way was PVWave enhanced over IDL? We have IDL here, and there will be
a demonstration of PV this weekend that I plan on attending. I like IDL,
and I imagine our department will keep getting it as it is updated, but
I'd like to know about PV also. Do they keep track of each other; that is,
if PV comes up with some cool command, will IDL figure it out too (and
vica-versa, too!)?

Ali Bahrami writes
... an excellent text on origin of IDL, PV-Wave, and NCAR Graphics.
Thanks for the info. The demo I saw was a guy at U. Texas who used
IDL for years and years. Appreciate the name - David Stern rings the
bell. I can also see how NCAR Graphics got into the loop; was aware
of the Boulder colocality; there is some similarity, enough to wonder
(without the misleading reference I got) about some genetic sharing
back in the musty past.
