Well, I don't know what I am looking for! :-)

In the File Explorer I choose to display the file
using the "Details" view. I see a "Date" field.
Perhaps that is the creation date and not the
modification date, which I was expecting. That
could certainly explain what I am seeing.

Ah, that is exactly what the problem is. If I
look at the file in more detail by choosing the
"Properties" dialog, I see both the creation and
modification dates.
