If you really want to do this (it's not documented, so it might not work
in future versions), try ENCODE_GIF:

IDL> encode_gif, -1, bytarr(10, 10) + 5B
% Loaded DLM: GIF.

See the code for write_gif.pro for an example of what is normally
written in the header.
