I was wondering if there is a way to implement a READ statement that would timeout after a certain period (say 3 seconds) and return a default choice if there is no user input. Something like a UNIX or DOS prompt that says:

Chose x, y, or z? (3): z

...and then the 3 counts down to zero and goes with choice 'z' if there is no input. Can IDL do something like that? The actual countdown timer isn't important for me, I was just wondering if there is a way to force a timeout on a READ or similar command.
