Since it is a work computer, I would suspect the graphics
card. Try setting the Graphics IDL preferences from hardware
rendering to software rendering and give it another try.

Let us know. :-)

Cheers,

David

First, thanks for the advice on things to try. I finally found someone
with a similar problems on Unix and finally found a solution that
required me to delete the IDL_Workspace and .idl folders from my
computer. That has fixed the problem I was having and I am back to
work.

As for cleaning my laptop up, not really an option. As a work
computer, it is a whee-bit of an exercise to install a single program,
let alone wiping the hard drive. Probably doesn't help that I have had
at most 20 GB free on my laptop (out of 150) for two years, and
usually run much leaner. I think at this point I need to consider a
new computer rather than just replacing the hard drive.

So now that I have this problem solved, here is a new one (in case
anyone is interested). I tried to use the plot() function in IDL 8.0
(not the plot direct graphics command). I have tried it on multiple
computers with the same recent. The plot window appears to pop up and
the program immediately closes. I suspect I just need to upadte the
program but was curious if anyone had similar experience.

Thanks again everyone,
Mike

I try to do it twice a year. At which point I discover the new ways in
which IDL does not work with the new OS version.

Ouch! I'd go back to your nightly back-up and see if you
can recover, if not everything, then certainly that
license file!

I don't have much advice, except that if you ever
get back to where you started, delete the bloated
IDL 7.0 version and keep the IDL 6.4. You will need
the help files occasionally. Not to mention running
IDL 6.4 every once in a while will lead to intense
feeling of pleasure and well-being. A completely
different feeling from running the latest versions! :-)

Cheers,

David

P.S. When is the last time you wiped your hard drive
clean and did a fresh install of everything? It's a
long weekend and you probably don't have anything else
to do. (I mean, you are fooling around with IDL,
aren't you!) Coyote recommends this procedure at
least once a year to keep your machine healthy and he
always seems to find a way to make sure I do it. ;-)
