Seriously. I've been a loyal (if occasionally outspoken)
customer for a long time. IDL has been my professional
life. But if a young person asked me what programming
language he/she should learn for scientific programming,
IDL would not be the first name I came up with any more. :-(

I suppose this is inevitable. No language lasts forever.
Is Borland Turbo C still around? And Python has its own
problems (e.g., the transition from 2 to 3). But, it's sad
to see. Now that I think about it, it's kind of like watching
your parents get old. Lots of nostalgia and lots of sadness, too.
Still, we soldier on until they are actually gone. What else
can we do?
