David,

with the rugby world cup final on in Auckland on the 23rd of October,
you might find that flights are substantially cheaper if you go the
following week. Especially if Australia somehow get to the final
despite the routing we gave them last weekend ;-)

Humm. I love Tasmania. One of my favorite memories is
rafting a river outside of Hobart there. But, New Zealand...
That's where my heart is at the moment. :-)

Not sure about New Zealand, but have you had a look at some of the
Trails in Tasmania? The Cradle Mountain National Park has some amazing
treks. The conditions should be good, although it can snow anytime of
year. I was there on Boxing day one year and we had snow! ( That's in
the height of summer in these parts for all you northern
hemispherites).

The Tarkine and Styx Valley are also well worth a visit.
