What is NTFS? Can this be made to work on windows95?

The 8.3 filename restriction was the reason why we finally got IDL for
Unix instead of for Windows 95. You're not alone and may not even be in
the minority!

The partition is NTFS as you guessed. Well, this is great news! All I
have to do now is move all the code I have archived away (waiting for
IDL V5.0) to an NTFS partition and I can run it again. I was waiting
rather than editing the code because I would have had to edit virtually
every proceedure. I am probably in the minority, but I like long
proceedure names, like WIDGET_SELECT_PRINTER and WIDGET_SELECT_FILE.
These two would be represented as WIDGET_S.PRO in a 8.3 bound FAT
partition. Hence the major editing job required to fix what can only
be described as a lack of foresight and a botched release of IDL for
Windows by RSI. I can only hope V5.0 will happily digest my heritage
code.

No, I was referring to the IDL V5.0 release.

It works not so much under NT, as NTFS. NT will run on either a FAT
filesystem, or if you're not braindead you can set it up on the NTFS
filesystem, which supports long names. NT's own files are 8.3 to
support use on a FAT, but as long as you are using NTFS on a drive it
should store long filenames quite happily. Do not try this on a FAT
floppy, as it will get you precisely nowhere!

As to when will NT 5.0 be released, the answer is probably "when MS
Marketing Department sees a good sales reason to make the next
incrememntal release a major version number"... ;-)

Pete.
