Option 2. My student is just starting trying to run IDL on this machine,
so it's not as if there were any useful preferences in there to worry
about. And I tested it out on my account by moving my .idl somewhere
else. ;-)
Haven't tried the company formerly known as the company formerly known
as RSI yet...

Humm. Did you try deleting the other two folders first,
then got mad and deleted everything? Or, you just said
the hell with it and deleted this folder from the get-go?

Yes. In fact, if you give a non-existant directory, it will successfully
create the directory.

Have you tried deleting the workbench config and preferences
folders in the .idl/itt directory? Couldn't hurt, as long as
you are willing to start over.
I'm not sure where you find these on LINIX. Probably in
your ~/name directory.
