That other IDL is for CORBA (Common Object Request Broker
Architecture). It is for building what is known as "middleware"
applications. It won't help you do image processing but there
will be lots of opportunities for CORBA IDL programmers in
the next several years.

I haven't actually done this, but I think you would have
to use a third layer written in C (maybe Fortran) to allow
Java and IDL to work together. In Java that would be called
a native method. You might have to run such an application
as a Java application where Java calls C which calls IDL.
If you want IDL to call C to call Java you would somehow have
to invoke the Java interpreter when the Java part was called.
